Outside a bush church, Daisy Bates, known as Kabbarli, Grandmother, and the Brother from the church ponder the fate of the aborigines, who are being forced to choose between the Western God and those of their ancestors. Following the confirmation of three girls, Goondowell, dances to exorcise the influence of the Church upon his people. Kabbarli then pleads with the Brother to understand and respect the ways of the Aborigines. Goondowell reappears and the opera ends with an Aboriginal song accompanied by didgeridoo.

On her last night in Darwin Gaol, Lindy Chamberlain relives the events of the night when her baby daughter Azaria was taken by a dingo and the subsequent trial when evidence in her favour was disregarded and evidence for expert witnesses indicates that she killed the child herself. The subsequent discovery of a matinee jacket, which she said the baby was wearing leads to a retrial which finds her not guilty. Lindy aserts that, her spirit has not been broken.
