Performing Ah! mes amis - pour mon âme from La Fille du Régiment by Donizetti and Che gelida manina from La Bohème by Puccini, Boyd not only demonstrated a high level of technique and vocal ability but captured audience’s attention with his storytelling ability. He was awarded a $35,000 scholarship, $5,000 cash, plus airfares to the value of $3,000 allowing him the opportunity to can engage in advanced studies abroad.
Following closely in second place soprano Jessica Harper was awarded $5,000 as well as the Audience Vote of $500. She performed Dis-moi que je suis belle from Thäis by Massenet and Non mi dir from Don Giovanni by Mozart.
Judges expressed the difficulty of discerning the winners as all eight finalists performed exceptionally. Sydney Eisteddfod congratulates Danita Weatherstone, Zoe Drummond, Joelene Griffith, Imogen-Faith Malfitano, Bronwyn Douglass and Amanda Windred on wonderful performances and all the hard work they put in to get to this point.
Over the years the Sydney Eisteddfod Opera Scholarship has earned the title of one of Australia’s most esteemed and prestigious classical singing events, attracting only the highest standard of emerging performers. Sydney Eisteddfod applauds Boyd once again and cannot wait to see what opportunities will arise as a result of winning this prestigious award.
2017 Young Virtuoso Award Event Details
The Fine Music Young Virtuoso Award participants will this year be selected from three Sydney Eisteddfod events. Six finalists for the Young Virtuoso Award competition will be selected from three different events at the Eisteddfod, including the Sydney Eisteddfod Opera Scholarship, the NSW Doctors Orchestra and Sydney Eisteddfod Instrumental Scholarship and The John Allison & Sydney Eisteddfod Piano Scholarship. Two musicians will be chosen from each category.
The NSW Young Virtuoso Award 2017 finals will be broadcast live from the Founders Studio on Sunday 27 August 2017. The finalists will perform live in front of a panel of adjudicators who will select the NSW Young Virtuoso Award finalist to go into the National competition.
