The opening night of each La Scala season is eagerly awaited by music and culture-lovers everywhere. Every year, February 7th, the day devoted to Milan’s patron saint Ambrose, the lyrical season begins with a wildly popular gala evening. Ticket prices reach extraordinary heights! Yet even by La Scala standards, this year was exceptional, with Principal conductor Riccardo Chailly and acclaimed Latvian director Alvis Hermanis presenting an opportunity to discover the audacious original version of Puccini’s beloved classic, hotly contested at its 1904 La Scala premiere. Orbiting around Cio-Cio-San (played by glorious soprano Maria José Siri) is a terrific international cast, including Annalisa Stroppa, Bryan Hymel, Carlos Álvarez and Carlo Bosi. Widely acclaimed, the production has been acknowledged as a triumph. Indeed, this opening night performance, captured live in HD, was received with a 15 minute standing ovation. Not to be missed!
