Eleanor of Aquitaine (Leonora), wife of King Henry II (Enrico) finds he has a mistress, Rosmonda, who is lodged in a tower under the protection of the young page Arturo. Leonora realizes that the page has fallen in love with this mysterious woman and suggests she will help him win her. Meanwhile Rosmonda, who has been alone in her tower for three months, is torn between love and remorse. Arturo brings news of her lover’s return, but adds that ‘concerns of the King’ keep him from her. However, permission has been given for an elderly knight to wait upon her, none other than Clifford, her father. From him Rosmonda learns her lover’s identity for the first time. Leonora appears and Clifford beseeches the Queen to take his daughter under her protection. Leonora agrees to do so, but Enrico, suspecting her malignant intentions, orders that she go back to Aquitaine the next day. Leonora, however, is determined not to be disposed of so easily. Clifford asks Rosmonda to leave with Arturo and they leave for the garden. Leonora finds her there but when Enrico and his troops appear, Leonora stabs Rosmonda. Enrico and Leonora acept that they both must accept Heaven’s blame.
