The magician Prospero and his daughter Miranda are banished to a magic island after he loses the duchy of Milan to his brother. Prospero uses his powers to liberate good spirits Maja and Ariel from the witch Sycorax, driving her into the sea and taking Ariel's son Caliban into his care. Nine years later, a ship passes by and Prospero orders Ariel to draw it to the island. It is wrecked during a storm. A survivor, Fernando, Prince of Naples, lands and meets Prospero, who realises who he is. Fernando meets Miranda and they fall in love. Three members of Fernando's retinue, Fabio, Stefano and Oronzo, come ashore. Caliban, appearing to them as the ruler of the island, encourages them to kill Prospero. Seeing Fernando as a threat, Caliban decides to disguise himself as Fernando and seduce Miranda but his plan is overheard by Prospero. Ariel leads the three shipwreck survivors to Prospero who turns them to stone but then releases them. Disappointed, Caliban throws himself into the sea. Ariel intercedes with Prospero for the lovers. A sailor arrives with news that the people of Milan have revolted and wish Prospero to return as their duke. He renounces his magic and they all leave the island.
