The prologue and first scenes look at dreams and ageing. Venus asks Jove to punish Apollo for revealing her affair with Mars. Meanwhile Daphne rejoices in her freedom from love, though Filena warns her that beauty fades. Aurora (Dawn) teases two lovers, Tithonus and Cephalus. To avenge Venus, Cupid shoots Apollo with his arrow. He falls in love with Daphne who flees until her father turns her into a laurel tree. Apollo is bereft, until she assures him his sun can shine on her tree.
