Sue is now a local Neutral Bay girl, having started life in country Moree followed by studies and jobs in Armidale, Sydney, Goulburn, Geelong & Melbourne. She has had careers in teaching (very briefly), library and information sciences as well as support and consulting roles in information technology. Each job has used those initial skills of presenting information logically and clearly, aided by reasonable people skills.
Fine Music 102.5 did not have a vacancy when she first applied for a library job, so she was waitlisted and eventually joined our volunteer ranks towards the end of 2012. She works in the library each Tuesday helping to organise CDs that are used for radio programmes the following week, and is involved with other collection development and processing activities.
Sue says ”the most enjoyable part is the stimulation and camaraderie of those around you – everyone knows more than me about music, and is happy to help in any way. It is so satisfying to be able to find exactly the right piece of music with the preferred performers someone needs in a hurry. There is never a week I don’t learn something new, or hear something beautiful I didn’t know existed. I feel very lucky indeed”.
As a soon to be a retired accountant I was looking around for something to do in my retirement and as I had been a subscriber to 2MBS for some years I thought that I would like to join this radio station, my only experience with radio was with a small community aspirant station in Mosman with which I had been for about 18 months. I joined 2MBS/Fine Music as a volunteer in November 1994 and started broadcasting as a presenter in February 1975, in October that year I was elected to the Board of Directors.
Since that early beginning I have been on the elected Broadcast Standards Committee and continued with this committee after it was no longer required to be elected by the members, plus a second term on the Board, the Finance Committee, Presenters Committee, the Programming Committee (still current) and Jazz Committee. During the last 15 years I have been training presenters and keeping training manuals up to date.
The last 23 years have been the best of my life, I love the radio station and I love everything that I do there, the company of the many other volunteers also makes every day spent at the station a joy.
