DONOR PROFILE:  DR MICHAEL FIELD AM

31/5/2018

Picture
“From my early teens, I was aware of an unusually strong effect which classical music had on me. I recall requesting LPs as the only presents I ever wanted to receive on birthdays. Bach, Beethoven and Brahms were early favourites, and still are! I was equally drawn to medicine and music, but in the end I took the path which allowed me to practice in a profession I loved while keeping music as my main source of recreation and relaxation. My working life was in medical education and medical practice (as a specialist in renal disease), based at Sydney University and Royal North Shore Hospital. I’ve been largely retired from that for some years, although I still contribute to medical school development in the Asia-Pacific region through an affiliation with WHO.”

There is always music in Michael’s home: his wife and three children are musical. His love of music has been more in listening than in performing although he sang in choirs and played the flute (including with the Australian Doctors Orchestra). Music was in the background of his whole working life and is now a major part of his retirement.

When asked what Fne Music 102.5 means to him, Michael replied: “I was an early subscriber to the new FM station 2MBS-FM as a medical student in the 1970s, and always admired the range of music it broadcast and the professionalism of its largely volunteer workforce. So it was a no-brainer for me to join up as a volunteer myself as soon as my very heavy work hours subsided in the early phase of retirement from late 2011 and I’ve increased my involvement as time has gone on. Fine Music is central to my ongoing enjoyment of classical music and has given me an outlet to share this passion with a wider listening audience as well as with new friends and colleagues at the station.”

As a programmer and presenter, Michael’s knowledge and love of music is evident particlularly in Recent Releases where he provides critical review. He has also created a series of programs explaining the impact on him of some great works. He’s given talks in the Enjoy, Learn, Discuss series and contributed to Fine Music’s youth programs. He is currently a member of the Presenters Committee.

As a regular donor to Fine Music, Michael says: It doesn’t take long working at the station to realise that there are considerable costs involved in keeping a radio station on-air despite the volunteer basis of most of its workforce. It’s clear that past and recent donations from very generous supporters have been crucial in allowing the station to continue its strong broadcast presence in Sydney and beyond, and I feel that in adding to that support I can show my appreciation and thanks for what is being achieved.”
